Short answer: protect organic traffic by crawling the old site, mapping every valuable URL, preserving ranking content, installing redirects, and validating Search Console and GA4 immediately after launch.

Before the migration

Start with evidence. Export indexed URLs, top organic landing pages, search queries, product and collection pages, and any pages that attract local or branded search. Do not assume only product URLs matter. Retail sites often rank through collection pages, service pages, brand pages, and old blog posts.

  • Crawl the current Lightspeed site and export every indexable URL.
  • Pull top pages and queries from Google Search Console.
  • Export GA4 landing pages and conversion paths if tracking exists.
  • Identify collections and products that drive organic traffic or store visits.
  • Document title tags, meta descriptions, headings, and important internal links.

During the Shopify build

Shopify collections should be organized around how customers search, not only how inventory is stored. Build category pages that can rank and convert: clear headings, concise buying guidance, internal links, filters that do not create crawl waste, and content that helps shoppers make decisions.

Preserve strong page copy where it exists, but improve thin pages during the move. A migration is a good time to add local pickup details, service pages, product guidance, FAQ sections, and stronger conversion paths.

Launch-day checklist

  • Install 301 redirects before DNS changes go live.
  • Confirm `robots.txt`, sitemap, canonical tags, and noindex settings.
  • Check GA4, event tracking, and Search Console access.
  • Submit the updated sitemap in GSC.
  • Test top old URLs and confirm they resolve to the right Shopify pages.
  • Monitor 404s, rankings, and organic landing pages for the first 30 days.
